I must get several emails per month from young women asking me how they can teach English as a second language (ESL) in Mexico. They usually want to know about teaching in Guanajuato specifically. What seems most alarming to me is that there is such an urban myth that you can breeze into Mexico, any part of Mexico, waltz into a local language school, and grab yourself a teaching job making a fortune. There are websites after website, usually trying to sell you an ESL workbook, an ESL recruitment service, or a school that will teach you how to be an ESL instructor, which all tell what amounts to lies. They will all but come out and say that you will live a life of unparalleled luxury in a romantic and exotic location and get rich teaching English to Mexicans. These websites are very easy to find. The sad truth that hits usually young American and Canadian women, right between the eyes is that none of this is true. Jobs in romantic and exotic places (this usually means in a beach resort, which is what all these ESL wannebee teachers want) are few and far between. Whether they pay well is highly suspect. The available jobs that pay well are usually in places most young college graduates have no desire to be. It is in large, polluted cities with a population in the high hundreds of thousands or even millions that will have jobs. Some might even pay enough to pay the bills—maybe. There will be jobs in the colonial cities like Guanajuato, but these small towns will not have positions that pay nearly enough to live on. The few exceptions all over Mexico are in positions with companies and schools of higher education. I know several positions in the university level where the pay is decent and they offer benefits. But these are rare. And you need to have working documents and make a long, long-term commitment. Though these jobs exist, I know few Americans who have them, but have made a permanent commitment to live in Mexico for the foreseeable future. These people have FM2 visas and own homes here in Mexico. Most of those coming to Mexico to teach ESL are “here today, gone tomorrow,” types. The private school directors who hire them call them “floaters” and tell me they are totally undependable. This book is meant NOT to be a definitive guide but a collection of essays and stories on working in Mexico and other venues as an ESL teacher. I hope that you will get a feel for what life as an ESL teacher is like here, from reading this book. There are plenty of other sources you can access online and in bookstores on “how-to teach ESL” and I suggest you check these out. This book is not necessarily a “how-to guide”, but a warning, a harbinger of what you are facing should you decide that coming to Mexico to try this out is for you. I have included an extensive Appendix with information that will be useful to you in a search for an ESL position. I have listed for your convenience, some cities in central Mexico where Americans, Canadians, and Europeans are finding work teach ESL.
